Age III begins with a vacuum. The Western Roman Empire collapses. No administrative system replaces it. Into that gap steps the Church. Bishops become civic leaders. Monasteries preserve literacy, law, and memory. The papacy evolves from a regional authority into a supra-regional institution. Over time, the Church does not simply inherit Rome; it reconstructs it in a new form.

This is not yet the aggressive, centralized system of later centuries. It is slower, more adaptive. Authority is negotiated through alliances with kings, especially in the Frankish and Carolingian worlds. The Church provides legitimacy; rulers provide protection.

Over time, this arrangement hardens. Canon law develops. Ecclesiastical hierarchy becomes clearer. The papacy begins to assert primacy beyond Italy. Christianity spreads across Europe, often through elite conversion rather than mass persuasion.

This is also the age of expansion. Missionary activity moves into northern and eastern Europe. Pagan systems are replaced or absorbed. Local practices are reshaped into Christian frameworks. The Church becomes the organizing logic of society.

By the end of this period, the structure is in place: a unified religious system, deeply embedded in political life, capable of coordinating belief, behavior, and identity across regions.

Age III creates the system that later Ages will strain and eventually break. It establishes:

Without this consolidation, there is nothing to centralize, nothing to challenge, and nothing to fracture.
